Back in 2012 I was painting in a Connecticut Walmart with Fox News. A passerby was interviewed and this was how I first met Ebony, a costume designer/performance artist. Four years later she is now writing a graphic novel and decided to steal a week away from her life as a wife and mother of school age children. She truly wanted to make progress on her book, and chose an Airbnb tucked away in the Litchfield hills of Connecticut.
When I arrived, she gave me a tour of the home and the grounds before we settled down in the livingroom. On the couch sat Ebony and her mother Dale and I sat in a chair across from them. The topic of conversation was why Ebony called herself an adult child. While giving the tour, she had pointed out that although the home had three bedrooms, she slept with her mom because she doesn’t like to sleep alone. As a grown woman in her thirties, she is “more afraid of the dark than her children are”. She never likes to be alone. When her husband is away on business, she often asks her mother to stay with her. They have a very close relationship and it is quite evident that Ebony enjoys her mother’s company.
The conversation progressed through various topics such as her childhood and inspiration (mainly her parents) before landing on the subject of astral projection and out-of-body experiences. Ebony took classes for quite some time on the practice of astral projection, but after having a second child, she realized that she could not devote as much time as she would like to it. Nevertheless she claims to have had three separate, vivid out-of-body experiences. She is deeply into mindfulness as well as astrology which she learned mostly from her mother.
