“You only get out of it what you put into it.”
What inspires you?
There’s this video about a scientific experiment- a little animation that explains it. Essentially, they took five monkeys and they put them in a cage and in the cage there was a ladder. At the top of the ladder were a thing of bananas which is a treat for the monkees. Whenever a monkey would climb the ladder to get the bananas, they would hose all the other monkees down with cold water. When a monkey would go up the ladder, he’d try to get the bananas and the other four monkees would get hosed with cold water. When he came back down the ladder, they would beat the crap out of the monkey.
Then they started supplanting one of the monkeys. He would start to climb the ladder and the others would beat the crap out of him. They wouldn’t get sprayed with water and he never got the bananas, but he was being punished for something and didn’t know why. They kept supplanting monkeys until there were five monkeys in the cage who were all afraid to climb the ladder, but didn’t know why. None of them had ever been sprayed with the water. None of them had ever gotten the bananas. It was this generational thing of ‘anyone who tries to climb the ladder is bad’. If you asked the monkeys, ‘why don’t you climb that ladder right there?’ and ‘why would you beat him up for trying to get the bananas?’, you’d have to assume they’d say ‘that’s just the ways it’s done’. That always struck me because I see that in everything we do.
There’s always a way in which things are done and there are limitations in how or why you would do something. So I guess what inspires me; I’d like to change the way something’s done- I don’t really know what it is or how it would happen. When you do something new, it becomes you. You can do things that have been done and fit in the category, but when you make a new path- when you change something- and it works out well… You’ve seen something that no one else has seen before. It’s not the money or the prestige or getting something named after you, but knowing that in the entire history of doing something, you’ve done it in a way that no one else had ever done it- I guess there’s something special about that.
